On Friday, September 16th 2016, Mrs. Miller’s class wrote a classroom constitution in honor of Constitution Day. We discussed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and finally the Constitution.  The students understand a constitution to be a ‘plan for the government of a country.  We talked about our classroom as being a community of which we all are a part.  The students then worked in groups to discuss and draft ideas for our own constitution.  After much deliberation, the students decided to ‘adopt’ the example as our own.  As each student wrote the adopted constitution on notebook paper, I wrote our final copy on bulletin board paper.  Each third grader then officially ratified our classroom constitution by putting their own “John Hancock” on the bottom of our final copy.
