First Graders Make a Lasting Impact in Lorain with Socks

On Thursday, November 9th, 2017, Horizon Science Academy of Lorain first graders traveled to the Haven Homeless Shelter to drop off their SOCKTOBER donations. This was part of a month long campaign which came to an awesome conclusion by helping others in need. The first grade team, headed by 2016-17 “Teacher of the Year,” Ms. Greif, worked tirelessly from the beginning of October to early November passing out flyers, offering dress down days for students to bring in socks, partnering with community organizations to raise awareness, and even hosted the first “Socks for Salsa Night,” all to make positive change. With all the events, the first graders surpassed their goal of 1,300 pairs of socks to a whopping…$189.00 in cash and 1,841 pairs of socks, which took one school bus and two SUV loads of donations!!!

In the end, a pair of socks may seem small but our students understand that something small can make a difference in the lives of others. From hurricane relief efforts, to Thanksgiving dinners, and through the donations of socks, Horizon students were able to make a positive change in the local community. At Horizon we believe that we must, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Thank you to everyone who helped support SOCKTOBER!!
