Former President Abraham Lincoln said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” With that said, Horizon Science Academy Lorain hosted its first ever Career Readiness Symposium for our Concept Young Scholars Program (CYSP) on Saturday, December 1st, 2018, with the hopes of sparking creative futures for our students.
The symposium was held in the auditorium and moderated by one of our teachers, Miss Blind. The panel was comprised of three established professionals who answered a series of questions about their career path, and the choices they faced leading up to their current roles. The panel included an engineer (Mr. Jayaraman), a physician (Dr. Bicer), and a college professor (Mr. Atkins). Students also had opportunities to ask questions about their careers and to engage in conversation about how to maximize their own opportunities in the future.
Overall it was a great event, and Horizon understands that one of the biggest factors in students’ lives comes from connecting how their education can relate specifically to them in their daily and future lives. For many students it’s hard to believe that education is relevant and important without proof and concrete examples, especially if students don’t have access to a good role model inside or outside of the classroom. For those students that learn by example, bringing in real-life professionals to talk about their careers is one way that we have helped our students to create a path towards their future.
